Worcestershire Planning Ajmal Swoop

Worcestershire County Cricket Club have reportedly made an offer to sign spin-bowler, Saeed Ajmal. The Pakistani, who was instrumental in his country's rout of England, earlier this week, will play for Worcestershire in the Friends Life Twenty20, if he can be persuaded to swap Asia for the West Midlands.

This week, Ajmal, 34, is arguably one of the most famous players in Pakistan. The Punjab-born cricketer took seven wickets for 55 runs in the first innings of Pakistan's recent Test with England, in Dubai, a "career-best" tally, to quote the BBC. He famously toppled Ian Bell, Andrew Strauss, and Kevin Pietersen with just five balls.

His trademark delivery, the 'doosra', a ball that spins from the leg-side to the off-side, took England by surprise. The cricketer has, however, been criticised for the same bowling action by retired player, Bob Willis, who claimed that Ajmal's methods are illegal. It could be that England are simply sore losers. Worcestershire have no qualms about his methods; "we were very happy and comfortable with the way he bowled," explained David Leatherdale, executive at the cricket side. "Everyone knows the impact he made for us last season. He is a class act." The Worcestershire boss added that his team have "put an offer on the table" for Ajmal.

The player is believed to be keen to return to the County Championship. Ajmal, who was 30-years-old when he made his international debut, has a first-class bowling average of 16.69 in one-day games. Ajmal will play for Worcestershire in June and July, according to a "verbal agreement" between the club and the cricketer.

Ajmal will make his next appearance for Pakistan, on Wednesday, during his country's second Test with England.
